Phillips School of Massage

This schedule includes Continuing Education Classes, Community Education Classes and CMT Training Programs. Many courses are offered as both introductory classes and continuing education and do not require any previous bodywork experience. Others are advanced courses requiring massage certification and are so noted. All courses that are offered for credit are recognized by the CA State Board of Registered Nurses for continuing education credits for nurses (CEP #6284) and by the CA State Board of Private Post-Secondary and Vocational Education and the National Certification Board for Therapuetic Massage and Bodywork.

While good massage is largely an intuitive art, its effectiveness increases dramatically when our intuition is informed by a solid knowledge of the structure and workings of the body. Anatomy and Kinesiology I is designed to give you a basic knowledge of the muscles, bones and movements of the body from a bodyworker’s perspective. In addition to watching anatomy DVDs and reading, we’ll spend a lot of time exploring the body experientially through palpation, movement exercises, clay modeling, coloring and “building muscles” on our resident skeleton, “Sydney.”

This preliminary workshop offered by Janine Nugent, Certified International Doula Trainer, is designed to prepare individuals who wish to become certified in the art of Childbirth Assistance. Intro to Child Birth is required for DONA Certification and is a DONA International approved course.

Develop a Private Doula practice of your own. Learn how to successfully market and promote yourself as a Professional Childbirth Assistant. This three-day workshop offered by Janine Nugent, Certified International Doula Trainer, provides all the training necessary to apply for DONA Certification. The Birth Doula Training class is required for DONA Certification and is a DONA International approved course.

Learn simple yet profound steps to consciously create your life with joy and abundance! Each of us, consciously and unconsciously creates our own unique experience of life according to how we perceive and relate to ourselves, to others, to our life situations, and to the environment in which we live. Through compassionate self-reflection and self-exploration we can gain greater clarity of our conscious and subconscious intentions, desires, patterns and fears, and identify how we may deepen our relationship with ourselves and the world around us.

Experience firsthand the therapeutic effects of hot stones and how they provide a deep sense of peace and grounding. This class will also give you a better understanding of how the inherent properties of hot stones naturally melt away stress and tension. The hot stones literally release the layers of muscle tension so it makes it easier for you, the therapist, to do deeper tissue work on your client.

This 2-day course will cover the basics of working with heated stones. Participants will learn how to prepare for a stone treatment, place stones on special points on the body and use the hot stones in conjunction with Swedish massage.

Hot Stone Massage is a popular modality in the spa industry as well as with private practice therapists. This class will increase your skill level and marketability in today’s expanding massage industry.

Pulse, Rhythm and Release (Pulse, R&R) is a powerful, yet simple-to-learn, method that can be used to gently achieve a profound deep release with even the most dense of body types.

“All Humans are instinctively ‘hard-wired’ for rocking.” Rocking is a natural way to soothe the body and mind. Pulse R&R is a non-invasive form of body work that uses rocking, pulse and rythym, as a foundation for encouraging freedom of movement and promoting deep release of tension in the body.

In this workshop, learn how to combine rythym and release with Myofascial stretches and pressure points to address specific symptoms with astounding results. This work is inspired by time-tested modalities such as Lomi Lomi, Trager® Approach and Myofascial Release and Grandma’s rocking chair.

During this two-day-intensive workshop Zach will introduce three Spa Therapies in two days; Body Scrub, Body Mask, and Spa Facial Massage. Tools to market these spa techniques in a private practice setting will be presented, reviewed and discussed on the final day of class.

This one-day class is for individuals and partners who wish to nurture and deepen their connection with others through therapeutic massage. Enjoy a relaxing day learning effective techniques for relieving stress and muscle tension. Discover and explore the values of touch and non-verbal communication.

This intro class offers CMT Professionals the opportunity to expand their practice by incorporating Deep Tissue strokes into their established Massage routines.

This advanced class offers students the opportunity to refine their work in a mentoring environment as the class agenda is largely based on individual students’ needs and their level of comprehension and ability. Consequently, these classes see many returning students,most if not all of whom are practicing massage therapists who value the atmosphere of professionalism, creativity and personal attention.

This is a loving, effective style of manual therapy whose purpose is to restore balance to both the practitioner and client with graceful joint, tendon and muscle stretching movements using hands, fingers, knees, elbows, forearms and feet in a wave-like rhythm. It is very useful on the largest of clients without strain to the practitioner.

Learn pressure-point techniques for the feet, hands, and ears to stimulate and de-stress the entire body. Reflexology can be effective on its own or used as a complement to any other massage modality. It is a great tool to use on ourselves, friends, family and clients.
No massage experience necessary!

First Degree Reiki is open to all who wish to begin or enhance their practice with an attunement to Reiki. During this workshop, the healing power of Reiki will be explored with hands-on demonstrations, studies and practice sessions. An initial attunement ritual during the workshop will introduce the beginning Reiki practitioner to experience the power of Reiki. This is the first attunement of the three-level Reiki series offered through Phillips’ School.

The drum is an important instrument for Indian people, giving both rhythm and meaning to life. It provides the beat for dancers to proudly offer their thanks and praise to the Creator and the Mother Earth during ceremonies. The tradition of the drum is still very important today and is a way of bringing the People together.

Give yourself the gift of a handmade rawhide drum. Tyler will help you bring your own drum to life in hours during an informative afternoon of fun and craft.
