650-hour Certified Massage Therapist Training Program

Phillips School of Massage offers a comprehensive program of study in massage and bodywork that includes three tiers of training and continuing education courses in a variety of bodywork modalities. Many State licensing boards (and employers) require a minimum of 500 hours of education. In 2009, the State of California adopted a voluntary certification requirement (SB 731) which by 2014 will require all massage therapist requesting State Certification (CMT) to obtain a minimum of 500 hours of training; CMT1 Practitioner (250 hours), CMT2 Professional (250 hours) and Anatomy and Kinesiology (50 hours) together offer a total of 550 credit hours. The CMT3 Comprehensive Studies (150 hours) includes Anatomy and Kinesiology (50 hours) and 100 hours of continuing education electives. CMT1, CMT2, and CMT3 combines to offer the massage professional a complete 650 hours of training.

CMT1 - Massage Practitioner (250 Hours)

Students learn a wide range of bodywork styles in both Eastern and Western modalities. Instruction also includes anatomy, physiology, nutrition, body dynamics, self-care and successful business practices. more info

Two-Part Sessions
You can choose to break up your training into two parts by taking the 100-hour - IMT Introduction to Massage Course which is the first 100 hours of CMT1 - Massage Practitioner Training, and then rejoining any of the CMT1 Practitioner trainings programs within one year of completing the IMT Introductory class (additional fees may apply).

Prerequisites
While there are no prerequisites, Anatomy and Kinesiology 1 is highly recommended for those seeking to practice massage professionally and may be taken before or after completing CMT1.

IMT - Introduction to Massage (100 Hours)

As the first 100 hours of the CMT1 Practitioner Training, this course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of massage therapy including skills of listening, sensitivity of touch, presence and the ability to respond to individual needs. Upon successful completion, students will have learned how to give a full-body massage. This is not offered as a professional training but as a gateway for those wanting to explore their interest in massage with the possibility of continuing their studies and completing a professional program. This course can also be valuable for health and personal care providers such as nurses (100 Contact Hours, C.E.P. # 6284) , estheticians, in-home care providers, hospice workers, personal trainers and others desiring to learn valuable tools for assisting others on their journey toward health and wholeness. more info

Two-Part Sessions
Graduates of the 100-hour IMT Introductory Course who decide to pursue a career in massage therapy may choose to continue with their class into the second portion of the CMT1 Massage Practitioner Program or may join another PSoM CMT1 Practitioner Training Program within one year of graduation (additional fees may apply).

CMT2 provides the opportunity to deepen your understanding and exploration of bodywork through student assistantship and review, internships and advanced courses. more info

CMT3 - Comprehensive Studies (150 Hours)

This course includes advanced studies that broaden and deepen the CMT Professional's knowledge and experience while granting the additional educational hours needed to obtain a business license in most states (please consult your local licensing board for the requirements in your area). There is an opportunity to focus on one area of study or to create a general course of study from one or more areas of concentration.

Graduates of CMT1, CMT2 and CMT3 receive certificates acknowledging 650 cumulative hours of training with PSoM. If actual course hours earned in CMT1 or CMT2 are less than 250-hours, credits may be made up with continuing education electives. Training may be completed within six months and must be completed within two years of beginning CMT1 Training (more time may be arranged by permission of the director). more info

COURSE CONTENT

Anatomy Intensive (50 credit hours)

ELECTIVES: Choose from two tracks, each 100 or more credit hours, to total 650 cumulative credit hours with PSoM

Track I: An Advanced Assistantship to CMT1 Training (30 credit hours) and Continuing Education Electives (70 credit hours). Develop communication and teaching skills and deepen your understanding of the techniques learned in CMT1 as you assist the CMT1 training. One-hundred-twenty participation hours earns 30 credit hours. Your commitment is your tuition, and there is no additional charge. (You may choose from any of our continuing education electives for the remaining 70 credit hours).

Track II: Continuing Education Electives (100 or more credit hours). CMT3 students may choose classes from any of the credit courses offered by PSM to fulfill the continuing education elective requirement.

PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION (nine massages): Four Massages given to Professional Massage Therapists with at least three years experience and one to the School Director. Four massages received from Professional Massage Therapists with at least three years experience (no credit hours assigned; critiques to be turned in).

CMT3 Schedule:

Enrollment is offered to all CMT2 Graduates
All CMT2 Graduates are automatically enrolled in this tier. There is no registration fee required. Valid CMT liability insurance is necessary for all students.

 


Continuing Education and Community Workshops

Expand your practice and explore different bodywork modalities through evening, weekend and extended training while earning Continuing Education credits as required by the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) and licensing agencies. PSoM is approved as a Continuing Education Provider by the California Board of Registered Nurses Since 1985 (CEP # 6284) and listed as a Continuing Education Provider by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).
